I like it). But this 'stardolls'...) Good place for some Blizzard ads or near
|
Thanks!
stardolls... was that really an advertisement that came up?
|
For some reason my mind jumped to SC themed calender women...
|
You should promote your site or noone will use it
|
Yes I seem to have that issue... send me ideas via mail
Obviously, I'll try to get some link exchanges with the other community websites and also we're applying for the Blizzard Fansite Program too.
|
I think you came too late, it will be a hard work!
Start spamming the link on all sc2 forums (not other map site or i thikn you'll get banned )
You should increase your google rating too using some good keywords.
I can't find your site using the words "starcraft 2 custom map".
|
Google hasn't really indexed the site properly yet. Give it a bit of time. The game hasn't come out yet so, when it does we'll have more than just the beta testers looking for maps/mods to download.
Thanks Bibendus, I'll be trying to get the word out before the games release.
|
The site has been indexed cause you can search it by full URL, probably your key selection is not good enough.
You should copy it from other sites like nibbits and mapster
now you have
starcraft, starcraft 2, starcraft ii, starcraft2, terran, zerg, protoss, starcraft 2 maps, starcraft 2 mods, starcraft 2 replays"
nibbits has
starcraft 2 maps forums projects help multiplayer online games downloads
I cant find mapster keywords
Remember that the first keys are the more important and you don't need to write starcraft 2 in all ways cause google can translate it automatically, he recognizes II as 2 and tests with spaces or not.
I think you should use something like
starcraft 2 maps replays mods download forum community galaxy editor
|
Oh and are you planning to store game replays too? If you are going to i suggest you to add some of them in your archive to start attracting visitors.
You should do the same with some maps that are not uploaded by the original author cause your archive is really small.
Then I hope there is some way to claim to be the owner of a map by sending you an automatic report.
|
I haven't added a way to switch who "uploaded" a map but I can do that manually through the database really easy which I can do via request until I set something like that up. I will consider spending some time requesting other maps from map makers individually and pulling some content with the appropriate credits. I set it up so that anyone can do this by selecting "No I'm not the author" and with the credits & copyrights as well.
I'll switch those keywords as you suggested. We only JUST got index on google - must have happened right before you searched. We're on page 3 for "starcraft 2 maps"... it will hopefully go higher in a few weeks time.
You can upload replays as an "extra" to a map/mod. I may setup a page where you can search replays but currently replays will require a map/mod for it to be submitted to.
|
Also, generally enquiries such as ownership of a map would be done via the contact us form/automatic report.

In regards to discovery of the site, I googled "top starcraft 2 mods" and this was the first site that came up. It seemed very professional and well laid out/administrated and I'm very glad I joined.

Welcome to the site Recon! Glad to have you here . We need more active members. Forums are a bit too... empty at the moment

Yea, this site is dead ish for the time being. But hopefully more of us map makers can make awesome maps that can only be had here so numerous that this site crashes from too much legitimate traffic. Now that's popular! For the moment, we can only learn from our mistakes, and continue to learn various stuff for our map making.

It's an unfortunate situation as maps are pretty much exclusive to battle.net now. While it appears at first glance that this would be helpful to map developers, it's actually causing some problems such as a lack of exposure for new maps. Blizzard have done a good job "consolidating" their gaming community, though maybe they've done too much as to actually alienate third party communities and projects.
In the interest of having multiple resources for map developers, hopefully the way battle.net works will change in the future, but either way this website isn't going anywhere.
Exclusive maps are a good way to promote the website. The best kinds of exclusive maps would be single player campaigns or role playing games, as they would probably be easier to share on a website such as this one, rather than the almost exclusively "multiplayer" gaming platform (battle.net). I think that will be a key issue, over time, for blizzard's battle.net development team to deal with and work on.

If Blizzard really have alienated that many third party developers and projects, maybe they took a page out of Nintendo's playbook? I never really expected that sites such as this one to be on the front page of the SC2 community sites or Battle.net without alot of effort on the behalf of members of such sites as this one.
Yea, but the biggest problem with the Single Player Campaigns and Role Playing Games is they are Trigger heavy. Without extensive knowledge for the time being in Triggers and other stuff outside of simple map making, we'll be lagging in the exclusive map stuff for now. I believe things will work out for the better for all of us... eventually. Until then, continue to learn Triggers and other stuff about the Editor and map making, and things will improve for us all.
Given enough time, I seriously think sweepstakes, and other contests will really benefit this site. I forgot who suggested this originally, but contests on "Best" voted maps, mods, and other stuff.

I'm sure Blizzard would be thinking in the best interest of both the business as well as the SC2 community, after all the community is what "makes" the game what it is - amazing. This site needs a community obviously and there are a few ways to get that happening. One of which, was to have a the website be a great resource, although with map developers having less reasons than anticipated to submit maps to online resources it kind of kills that opportunity to build a community up. Contests and promotional things are great ideas, although they require funding.
I think the best maps could be trigger heavy but yeah the best things take time unless you get lucky with some really fun concept that is pretty basic in code.

Yea, I'm wanting to make a bit of a Trigger based map based on that four player map in Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3: Uprising with the giant cannons in your base, acting as instant death to whoever the cannons hit. I say Trigger based because I'm thinking that'd be required for anyone to get a hold and maintain control over the giant laser machine, forgot what it's called, in the Campaign. I think if I did it right, it'd be a major hit... eventually with the SC2 community. That and I've been wanting to do a Red Alert 3 SC2 remake map series for a long time now. I figure I'll for the smaller maps first or something. I know in Red Alert 3, the matches always seemed to feel as if they weren't supposed to last longer than a half hour each due to how easy it was to reach the top tiered units and buildings for the three civilizations in the game. Still, I think you're right Joe about your idea that having exclusive maps here will help sell the community on coming on over here for a gander, and perhaps joining. I figure my Red Alert 3 map series should be exclusive purely to get more legitimate traffic here.

One thing that might help is if you mention the website URL inside of your map perhaps when it's loading or by displaying text when the game starts, and if the map becomes popular people will know to check out the site and hopefully from there we can get a large community and some real discussions happening!
|

Aw! That's actually not a bad idea, Joe. I found two or three Triggers, while messing around with the Triggers on my Test Trigger map that displays whatever text you want wherever you want, and apparently however you want too. If I can harness that, perhaps I can fit that type of Trigger into my future maps. And when you mentioned this, I remembered that on some of the maps that I played on, on Battle.net such as the Phantom maps, and mass production/war maps one or more web site addresses popped up for a little bit before disappearing. Never went to any of these sites purely because I forgot about them due to my desire to play the maps and not be killed in within five seconds' time... again.

Maybe it's even better if the website URL is mentioned at the end of the game if that is at all possible. E.g. "Congrats you win! Now go checkout www..."
|
3rd December 2010 at 7:20am
I think that'd work best as a Trigger. I did find out through the Triggers you can use a subtitle for the beginning of the match, but going for the end of the game, especially for any dropped out players through lag, or abandoning the game should still get the message, unless if the game crashes on that player first. Though I wouldn't go the pushy route, Joe. I'd try the more sly as a fox type of thing. I'll leave the pushy stuff to the U.S. Government/TSA.
|
4th December 2010 at 11:35am
haha... yeah but just providing a suggestion about a website to visit isn't that bad.
|
7th December 2010 at 7:27am
In my three maps I uploaded today, Joe, I believe I managed to put in a Trigger for when you start the match, it uses a message in the Subtitle area something like "Thanks for playing on my map! Once this match is over, visit www.starcraft2maps.net for more maps and mods!". Perhaps it'll be forgotten, but since it's a Trigger, it'll execute every time the maps played. From what I saw from testing the Trigger out, it'll display for roughly ten seconds. About five seconds as full text, and another five seconds for fading out. The three maps I uploaded are the Casual Encounters, and Battlebase Hexis ones. The third map is the Campaign version of Casual Encounters. Yep, more Red Alert 3 madness!

Awesome stuff, it's good to hear this! Hopefully your maps will become popular too!
|
9th December 2010 at 6:46am
Yea same here. I figure the Command and Conquer remake maps probably wind up most popular though. Afterall, I've seen alot of remake maps for the first Starcraft and Brood War years ago. Hopefully the Final Fantasy remakes aren't the most desirable ones... I ain't that good with Triggers yet.
|
10th December 2010 at 7:37pm
Well with triggers it's really just about playing around with the editor. Soon enough I think you'll be making final fantasy full multi-player rpg's, if that's what you want to do? I remember playing some multiplayer role playing games on warcraft 3 with friends.. good times...
|
11th December 2010 at 5:25am
Hmmm... How about like a Final Fantasy 7 remake? lol Oh man, that'd be insanely hard to do, I bet, but if done correctly probably be just as awesome as the PS1 version. Too bad Squaresoft doesn't seem interested in making a PS3 remake of FFVII. Now if I or someone else could do a massive FFVII remake of a map/game made through Editor and put it on this site or File Planet or both, both sites could very well crash from too players wanting the game/map. Still though, I remember the Final Fantasy maps for Starcraft and Brood War to be out of my league in Triggers and gameplay. I remember the first time I accidently wound up on playing a Final Fantasy map on Battle.net once. Everyone got angry at me because I didn't know what was going on. I told the "Dungeon Master" of the match to kick me off because they didn't want me there, and I didn't want to be there. Eventually I did get kicked off, and managed to thank the guy before exiting the match altogether.
But I'll stick with the Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 and Uprising remakes for now. Most of those maps don't seem to require any Trigger workings. Except for the attempting to make standard website visitation suggestion subtitle Trigger. I'm wanting to get the website in the subtitle underlined at least. Not sure how to do that yet.

11th December 2010 at 11:35am
I wouldn't bother with underlining the url since it's not really a link. Underlining text of a URL may confuse people into thinking they can click on it haha
If you wanted people to find more of your maps, you could always link to your profile, or your submissions page:
http://www.starcraft2maps.net/members/wolf_of_darkness007/submissions/
Or possibly just your maps-only page:
http://www.starcraft2maps.net/maps/members/wolf_of_darkness007/
Hmm... only I'm thinking this may be quite a long url address for people to visit. You could always make a tiny url redirect from one of those websites such as www.tiny.cc.
|
15th December 2010 at 8:25am
That's possible. I was thinking the link to the homepage would be more fair to everyone. If I can't underline the "www.starcraft2maps.net" perhaps I could put it in bold to get it to stand out, but not as an URL? If anything, can't get the message too long as I think it'll cut off as a "..." at the bottom. That and not everyone wants to read what would wind up being thought of a small book in the span of five seconds.
