To my knowledge they are located in a cache system. To launch a map downloaded from here, open the map with either a tool such as lazy launcher (not yet added to this site) or do it manually by opening the map in the starcraft 2 map editor, and then selecting File->Test Document from the main men. If you want to play with computers you need to modify the players settings which is also accessible from the main menu. For the time being, this is the only way to play "offline".

Your cache folder should be located (windows XP) somewhere in your application data folder or in your documents folder, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Starcraft II\Maps\

For cache files with strange numbers, you may need to rename them to the Starcraft 2 file extension (.SC2Map) before loading it with the map editor. If it doesn't load, there is a chance it is "protected" but it is unlikely to be the case.

Yea. Due to Blizzard's hellbent methods of forcing you to sign into your Blizzard account just to go beyond opening the game, you have to use a crack which is easily begotten through some Torrent sites, or concede to Blizzard's ways and download their maps from their servers. I personally am against forcing any player to sign onto any website or service just to play a game that's not a MMORPG, where the game requires an active Net connection just to be a game. Now if Blizzard went the route they took with SC1, and Brood War, I wouldn't have a problem as just to do MP games on Battle.net you'd have to sign into your Blizzard account which wasn't a bad deal as Battle.net wasn't a bad place.

Anyways, avoid the maps with the extension, .sm2ap or something like that. I saw that with SC2Allin1, the program read those files just fine, but SC2-retail wouldn't open them as I figure they're Beta maps. You're right, Joe, for the XP directory thing. Though I've done this exactly on my main computer, SC2 still refuses to acknowledge the maps I put into that Map folder. Which leads me to strongly suspect that when you download the maps from Blizzard's servers the game installs/writes one or more Registry entries to tell the game where to find the maps exactly and how to use them. I did find on one of the Torrent sites a walkthrough how to use one of the top SC2 cracks with accompanying screenshots. Though I personally don't see the purpose in that crack as you're required to sign into Blizzard just to download the maps from them, and you can play offline... It doesn't make any sense to me as if you can get online with the game, why bother with the crack in the first place? But of course, if you get any cracks for SC2, you use them at your own peril.

If you're aiming for offline play, try SC2Allin1. Lazy Launcher crashes for me every time I try to open any map with it. I've heard that SC2Allin1 was originally developed for the Beta but still works fine with the Retail version of the game. Well for the time being anyways. I know with SC2Allin1 it's so good that you can actually choose where you want to be located for a Starting Location. From what I've heard about the in game methods, you're still doing better with the use of Triggers for choosing the Starting Location you want than a random one. I wonder if it's true about the in game methods though.
