What are minerals?
You can earn minerals by, in general, being more active around the site. For example, once per day you can earn minerals by simply logging into your account. There are more ways to earn minerals which we won't mention here, and we are working on adding more ways to earn minerals too.
You may download up to 5 files per day (without needing to be logged in/registered). By registering and logging into your account you may download additional files per day (at a rate of 1 mineral per each additional file downloaded).
There's a lot of minerals around and no real restrictions
Where is your mineral count?
On your profile page (click "view profile") it says how many minerals you have under "Statistics".
I hope that helps answer your questions

You should mention your contact details. I'd make a map, but it's a lot of work for me right now!

I think it's cool, getting to play 3 full campaigns, but it's way too dragged out for me to enjoy it properly.

LAN gaming is just local area network gaming. I've done this through linking computers up at home and playing with family and friends. I've also done LAN gaming at "net cafes". It's rather fun to know you're beating up your friend rather than just some complete stranger, because bragging rights is always the prize. Although, I've had friends ALT-F4 the games we were playing because they lost too frequently and the taunting became too much, I suppose! Hehe... it's rather funny though.
Anyone can feel free to use these forums to "hook up" LAN parties, although someone has to initiate a request and make an attempt to start one first! There isn't any at the moment on these forums... still looking rather empty out there! lol - *looks around* ... they must be in battle.net still... I think one day they'll log off and come online and find us haha.
Not implementing/removing the entire LAN feature IMHO was a bad move by Blizzard, or at least, it was many years too early! Internet access is an expense to gamers, making the game even less available to those who don't have a ton of money to spend. It may help reduce piracy a lot to have multiplayer ONLY accessible through their Battle.net system, but LAN gaming is what gets the communities together and sparks real interest and competitive gameplay!
Times are changing but I think LAN still has a good reason to exist, today and for many years ahead!

It's my understanding that a fixed page width, like this site uses, is the optimal size. I have seen side banner ads which only really appear to those with widescreen monitors. The footer bar takes up some of the widescreen area when you expand the options, it was designed to be that way actually.
I don't see the need to bring any more advertisements in at this stage, but I agree that it would be helpful for getting some revenue to support contests/competitions. The problem with too many advertisements is that it will deter people from the website. Most people that come here just want to quickly grab some maps to play - and that's fine. It's a shame we can't get some conversations happening. Personally I'm rather busy with a full load of projects in development. I haven't had a chance to login to battle.net for a few months now
.
By the way, yes I am the admin and owner of the site. I appreciate your kind comments about the site as well.

Well it's your map - you put in all the effort, I don't see the issue linking to your other maps primarily. Bold is a good effect I suppose, but really it's not a big deal to add small details like that im my opinion. Just focus on creating great gameplay and people will find the site through a plain link anyway!

I wouldn't bother with underlining the url since it's not really a link. Underlining text of a URL may confuse people into thinking they can click on it haha
If you wanted people to find more of your maps, you could always link to your profile, or
your submissions page:
http://www.starcraft2maps.net/members/wolf_of_darkness007/submissions/
Or possibly just your maps-only page:
http://www.starcraft2maps.net/maps/members/wolf_of_darkness007/
Hmm... only I'm thinking this may be quite a long url address for people to visit. You could always make a tiny url redirect from one of those websites such as www.tiny.cc.

Well with triggers it's really just about playing around with the editor. Soon enough I think you'll be making final fantasy full multi-player rpg's, if that's what you want to do? I remember playing some multiplayer role playing games on warcraft 3 with friends.. good times...
7th December 2010 at 5:22pm
Awesome stuff, it's good to hear this! Hopefully your maps will become popular too!
4th December 2010 at 11:35am
haha... yeah but just providing a suggestion about a website to visit isn't that bad.
2nd December 2010 at 8:09am
Maybe it's even better if the website URL is mentioned at the end of the game if that is at all possible. E.g. "Congrats you win! Now go checkout www..."

To my knowledge they are located in a cache system. To launch a map downloaded from here, open the map with either a tool such as lazy launcher (not yet added to this site) or do it manually by opening the map in the starcraft 2 map editor, and then selecting File->Test Document from the main men. If you want to play with computers you need to modify the players settings which is also accessible from the main menu. For the time being, this is the only way to play "offline".
Your cache folder should be located (windows XP) somewhere in your application data folder or in your documents folder, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Starcraft II\Maps\
For cache files with strange numbers, you may need to rename them to the Starcraft 2 file extension (.SC2Map ) before loading it with the map editor. If it doesn't load, there is a chance it is "protected" but it is unlikely to be the case.

One thing that might help is if you mention the website URL inside of your map perhaps when it's loading or by displaying text when the game starts, and if the map becomes popular people will know to check out the site and hopefully from there we can get a large community and some real discussions happening!
25th November 2010 at 7:34pm
I'm sure Blizzard would be thinking in the best interest of both the business as well as the SC2 community, after all the community is what "makes" the game what it is - amazing. This site needs a community obviously and there are a few ways to get that happening. One of which, was to have a the website be a great resource, although with map developers having less reasons than anticipated to submit maps to online resources it kind of kills that opportunity to build a community up. Contests and promotional things are great ideas, although they require funding.
I think the best maps could be trigger heavy
but yeah the best things take time unless you get lucky with some really fun concept that is pretty basic in code.

It's an unfortunate situation as maps are pretty much exclusive to battle.net now. While it appears at first glance that this would be helpful to map developers, it's actually causing some problems such as a lack of exposure for new maps. Blizzard have done a good job "consolidating" their gaming community, though maybe they've done too much as to actually alienate third party communities and projects.
In the interest of having multiple resources for map developers, hopefully the way battle.net works will change in the future, but either way this website isn't going anywhere.
Exclusive maps are a good way to promote the website. The best kinds of exclusive maps would be single player campaigns or role playing games , as they would probably be easier to share on a website such as this one, rather than the almost exclusively "multiplayer" gaming platform (battle.net). I think that will be a key issue, over time, for blizzard's battle.net development team to deal with and work on.

Thanks, these instructions will come in handy for map development!

Well I generally compare between Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 battle.net experiences, since I mostly played Starcraft original in a LAN environment rather than online. I generally get crushed online in Starcraft!
My experience with Battle.net 2.0 is that it has some major improvements but the lack of support for "new" custom maps was quite shocking to me. I had expected the promotion of maps to be automatic but now it has become almost a requirement to market your maps, individually, in order to get anyone to play them. Melee/single player maps are mostly OK from my experience, but map development for games that rely on multiple players (multiplayer-only maps) have been crippled - there's simply a lot less of a point to making a quick "new" map like the good old days of Warcraft 3 battle.net 1.0.
On a positive note, playing the main campaign while having access to chat with friends was a real bonus. I am also kind of a sucker for achievements! Ranking in leagues was not my primary objective when I got online but I felt the ladder system was built well enough. There was hardly any waiting for a match and the competition seemed fairly even. I got a butt-whoopin' but that's just because the main reason I play Blizzard games for is the custom gaming experience and LAN with friends.

Well the problem is mostly here you'll find starcraft fans
. I mean, the warcraft and starcraft worlds kind of "came together" because starcraft 2 is so similar to warcraft 3, but diablo itself is a very different style of gameplay.
17th November 2010 at 5:18pm
Regarding symmetry, I think you can do that EASILY by copy/pasting a section of land and rotating it so as to create a mirror image. You don't have to manually recreate each side of the map lol. I haven't tried it in this editor but it was definately a feature of the warcraft 3 editor. Don't ask me how to do it though lol I can't remember by now!
16th November 2010 at 4:20pm
The kind of maps I typically play are tag or role playing based maps. Regarding melee maps though:
1. Symmetry = must have for fairness of play yeah
2. Natural = i'd use the word "realism" instead personally, but yeah this is a bonus to any map
3. Experimentation = maps based on new ideas, even within the limitations of melee maps, often turn out to be the best maps available. The "fastest map possible" games were the best and all it altered really was the rate of minerals/vespene gas
Some points I would add...
4. Don't always stick to melee maps - starcraft 2 is a strategy game on its own, there is room for more types of maps!
5. Single player maps have value too - making only multiplayer maps isn't always the way to go. A well told story/RPG series will definately get my attention.
6. Size VS Playtime - a large map doesn't always have to mean long play duration - build bridges and quick access routes!
7. New resource types - the new map editor allows for this exactly so why not take advantage? This will prove the most ground-breaking and interesting from such a simple act as creating a game scenario based on resources that are collected and used in different ways.

Hi there! Welcome and be sure to upload those starcraft map remakes of yours when you finish them.

Hey, welcome and goodluck with your sc2 mapping!
20th September 2010 at 12:29am
Well, a mod could really be anything. Some great mods would be ones that map developers can implement into their maps easily - for example, you could create a set of "Tower Defence" towers, creeps, etc. and then Map Makers can use your mod and then simply "choose" which ones they want to add to their Tower Defence map. Kind of like a template
Or, how about a warcraft 3 mod or mods for other popular games? Hey, even creating completely new races players can add to their melee maps would be pretty cool. I'd love to see some awesome new races using imported 3d models from other games (with permission from the game developers, of course).
