I always feel like map making should be a fun experience. While you learn, it may help to create a map based on a very simple idea. Some examples of simple maps would be a basic tower defence map (get you trained in making new custom units/buildings) as well as melee maps to give you some practice with making terrain. Check out the forums as there are some resources given during some discussions regarding this stuff. Best of luck to you XxcabaxX!
